The Development Prospects of New Energy Technologies in Electric Power in Daily Life
New energy technologies are increasingly becoming a part of our daily lives, a trend that’s well-illustrated by McDonald’s recent opening of a zero-carbon restaurant in Guangzhou. This innovative establishment, complete with photovoltaic panels on its roof, shows how new energy isn’t just for large-scale projects—it can be seamlessly integrated into everyday environments.

A series of recent studies have been pushing the envelope in this area. The Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER), for instance, has developed a translucent perovskite photovoltaic cell. This material, which can be added to glass, has the potential to transform our home windows into photovoltaic panels, making energy harvesting an integral part of our living spaces.

To further advance the concept of portable energy, the Fudan University team’s research was published in the February 2024 issue of Nature. Researchers have developed a new calcium-oxygen battery that can be made into flexible fibers.

Schematic diagram of calcium-oxygen battery structure
The battery is mainly composed of three parts: metallic calcium as the negative electrode, air adsorbed by carbon nanotubes as the positive electrode, and ionic liquid as the electrolyte. With the assistance of ionic liquids, metallic calcium can undergo a redox reaction with oxygen at room temperature to generate electrical energy.

The entire process is said to be very environmentally friendly and does not produce high temperatures or toxic gases.
The biggest challenge for this type of technology is the number of charge-discharge cycles and the degree of flexibility of the battery. In recent developments, these materials have achieved 700 charge-discharge cycles and can operate stably even when bent to an angle of 180 degrees. If the technology matures, it can be made into flexible fibers – imagine wearing clothes that serve as power banks and power stations. This research points to a future where power supplies are not only portable but also wearable.
Our solar power banks are a tangible representation of this trend. Designed to deliver power wherever there’s sunlight, these devices provide a stable power source for your devices, whether you’re outdoors or at home.
To improve the durability of solar technology, from RIKEN, Japan, published in the February 2024 issue of Nature Communications . The development of waterproof organic photovoltaic cells is discussed.
In the past, researchers have focused on developing sealing membrane technology, but balancing flexibility and water resistance has been challenging. This time, however, the researchers changed their approach, starting with the battery itself.
Typically, a hole transport layer is added between the anode and photoactive layer of the cell. Without getting too deep into the technical details, the key is that this hole-transporting layer is typically not waterproof, which is one of the main reasons conventional batteries struggle to be waterproof.

Scenario of generating electricity in water using the developed ultra-thin organic solar cells
However, in this study, the researchers found that they could enhance the battery’s water resistance through some degree of heat treatment. It is said that the improved organic photovoltaic cell can continue to operate underwater for more than 60 minutes, and the energy conversion efficiency can still remain at 96% even after experiencing 300 compression deformations underwater.
It should be noted that this is not to add waterproof measures to the battery, but the battery itself is waterproof. This means the health monitors, smartwatches and electric car battery packs we wear in the future can continue to function even when it rains or is soaked in water.
These developments demonstrate how new energy technologies are gradually reshaping our lives, with our solar power banks playing a key role in this transformation. We’re committed to making new energy products more accessible to the public, promoting the use of eco-friendly energy storage solutions that are not only affordable but also of excellent quality.
As we look forward to the further evolution of new energy technology, we’re excited about providing you with even better and more convenient products.
